A remote and undeveloped paradise island a short boat ride away from the Cambodian coast, Koh Rong Sanloem attracts visitors for its tranquility. Well worth a visit for its slow paced atmosphere and pure, natural beauty this is the perfect place to chill out. However, there are a number of holiday activities offered by Koh Rong Sanloem making it an essential stop on any Cambodian travel itinerary.
Boasting crystal clear waters, Koh Rong Sanloem is an ideal location for snorkeling. With visibility remaining a very high standard around the island, a casual flipper around snorkeling is enough to witness a good range of sea life. Either hire a mask and explore independently or take an organised boat trip which stops at several points along Saracen Bay and Koh Koun just off Sanloem’s coast.
If snorkeling doesn’t offer a big enough view of the sea life inhabiting the Gulf of Thailand, opt for a scuba diving trip. With a few dive companies based in Sihanoukville maintaining a presence on Koh Rong Sanloem it’s possible to arrange a dive whilst staying on the island. Whether PADI certification or a light try dive is key this is a great place to experience the depths near Sanloem for some stunning coral and fish.
An ideal activity to break up a lazy day on the beach, hire a kayak from The Beach Resort for only $10. A fun and not too physically strenuous way to splash around, hiring a kayak is a lovely way to meander along the bay. If a more action packed kayaking experience is desired head out on an organised tour which explores a number of areas including rocky island, a fishing village and the cave waterfall.
Although Koh Rong Sanloem is a relatively small island with an area of just 24.5 kilometers squared there is still a fair amount of distance to cover. What better way to do this than to cycle? With stunning jungle foliage and paths leading across the island to opposite beaches, mountain biking is a great way to view Koh Rong Sanloem’s nature and discover alternative areas to the main strip of beach huts on Saracen Bay.
Visit the Lighthouse
The old lighthouse on Koh Rong Sanloem is an unexpected, hidden feature and it is well worth visiting. Set in a fairly undeveloped island with little building work and known for its untouched idyllic surroundings, the old lighthouse is a rare find. A lovely point to walk to situated on the southwestern corner of the island, visiting the lighthouse makes for a nice day trip.
With a bounty of nature, from the trees and plants to largely undisturbed animals who outnumber human inhabitants on Koh Rong Sanloem, trekking through the light jungle is an essential activity when staying here. Spend a whole afternoon or simply a few hours strolling around the jungle or along the coastline and witness Cambodia’s hidden natural treasures.
Full Moon Party
With a low key reputation in comparison to the infamous Full Moon Parties which take place on Thailand’s Koh Pha Ngan, the Koh Rong Full Moon Party is up and coming and a hundred times more enjoyable than the overrated Thailand bash. Taking place once a month in peak season at full moon, take a boat to Koh Rong Sanloem which sits a stone’s throw from Sanloem and party on the beach until the sun rises.
It may seem silly but one of the best things to do in this utopia is to enjoy the relaxing beach atmosphere. Recline, get lost in a novel, listen to the sound of the waves lapping on the shore, take some time to appreciate life’s simple pleasures away from the manic drag of everyday life. With soft, powdery white sand, no motorised vehicles and peaceful silence for miles around, take the time to completely unwind in this relaxing haven.
Visit the Waterfall
Discover the beauty of the waterfall, another of Koh Rong Sanloem’s stunning natural features. Perfect for a refreshing organic shower after walking there in the humid heat, the waterfall is a reminder of the island’s effortless paradise environment.
Watch the Sunset
With views to write home about, there aren’t many better things than watching the sunset on an isolated beach. With the clear distant horizon and smoothly surfaced sea to reflect the sun’s dying rays, enjoy a chilled beer or a cocktail at one of the beach side bars whilst experiencing the best part of the day and soaking up the beauty of the orange-stained sky.
